Background of the Study
Emergency nursing care plays a crucial role in the early stages of patient recovery, particularly for those with acute injuries or illnesses that require immediate attention. Emergency nurses are trained to assess and prioritize patients based on the severity of their conditions, administer initial treatments, and stabilize them for further care. The quality of emergency nursing care directly influences patient outcomes, including the speed and extent of recovery. Effective emergency care can significantly reduce the risk of complications, enhance recovery time, and improve overall survival rates (Uchechukwu & Eze, 2023).
Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) serves as a leading healthcare institution in southeastern Nigeria, providing comprehensive emergency services to a diverse patient population. The hospital is equipped to handle a wide range of medical emergencies, including trauma, cardiovascular events, and respiratory crises. Despite the importance of emergency nursing care in improving patient recovery, there is limited research evaluating the specific influence of emergency nursing interventions on patient recovery in Nigerian teaching hospitals.
This study will appraise the influence of emergency nursing care on patient recovery at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital. The study will examine the various interventions provided by emergency nurses, how they contribute to patient outcomes, and the challenges faced by emergency nursing staff in delivering optimal care. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights into how emergency nursing care can be optimized to enhance patient recovery in the hospital and beyond.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Emergency nursing care is pivotal to the initial management and recovery of patients with critical or acute conditions. The interventions provided in the emergency department can determine the course of a patient's recovery, as early stabilization can prevent further complications and improve long-term outcomes. However, there is limited research on how emergency nursing care specifically influences patient recovery in Nigerian teaching hospitals. While it is understood that emergency nursing interventions have a significant impact on patient survival, the extent of their role in overall recovery is not fully explored.
Enugu State University Teaching Hospital is a key institution in southeastern Nigeria that provides emergency care to a large number of patients annually. However, there is a gap in understanding the specific contributions of emergency nurses to patient recovery within the hospital. This study aims to assess the impact of emergency nursing interventions on patient recovery, identifying the types of care that are most effective and any challenges faced by emergency nursing staff. The results will contribute to improving the quality of emergency care and ultimately enhance patient recovery in the hospital.
Objectives of the Study
1. To appraise the influence of emergency nursing care on patient recovery at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To identify the specific emergency nursing interventions that contribute to patient recovery.
3. To assess the challenges faced by emergency nurses in providing care and recommend strategies to improve recovery outcomes.
Research Questions
1. What is the influence of emergency nursing care on patient recovery at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital?
2. What specific nursing interventions in the emergency department contribute most significantly to patient recovery?
3. What challenges do emergency nurses face in providing care, and how can these challenges be addressed to improve recovery outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Emergency nursing care does not significantly influence patient recovery at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital.
2. H₀: There are no specific nursing interventions that significantly contribute to patient recovery in the emergency department.
3. H₀: Challenges faced by emergency nurses do not significantly affect patient recovery in the emergency department.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the role of emergency nursing care in patient recovery at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital. The study may be limited by factors such as resource availability, the diversity of patient conditions, and the willingness of participants to share data.
